"SUPERSTITION AND FEAR"
by Vicki Sturgill
The New Year to most of us
means promises to do better: work harder–study
harder–eat less–lose weight–exercise
daily–daily Bible readings–pray more–and
on we can go. This year the emphasis on television programs was
different. New things were presented saying they were the old and
perhaps for some people they were old, but certainly not what should
have been presented. The television programs spoke of superstitious
means of reaching those goals you would like to reach. People were
encouraged to put bay leaves in their billfolds to make sure they
earned a lot of money during the year. We were told we needed to get
rid of our old “energy” by taking baths in certain
spices and aromas. Then to renew or “energy” we
were to take bathe in other spices and aromas. Eating certain beans
would make our New Year be prosperous. Looking for a husband or wife?
Eat pomegranates. Clothes used for the New Year parties were to be
white, yellow or gold. Certain fish were a must on the menu. Sad to
say, many people today are steeped in superstition and fear. It is not
God´s will that we live such a miserable life that comes from
superstition and fear. I Peter 5:7-11 gives us the recipe for an
abundant and joyful life. “Casting all your care upon him;
for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary
the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may
devour; Whom resist stedfast in the faith knowing that the same
afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by
Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect,
stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever
and ever. Amen.” Never has it been so necessary to depend
upon the Lord for protection. Just knowing that He will protect and
care for us brings calm to our hearts. Jéssica, a 16 year
from our church, leaves home every morning before the sun rises for
school. She must pass a corner where drug and alcohol addicted young
men hang out. We must cast our worries upon the Lord to protect this
young lady. Only her faith in the Lord keeps her on her daily trip to
school. Satan has won the hearts of so many in the world today. But we
can thank and praise our Lord that he has strengthened us to face the
evil around us so that we join Peter in saying “To him be
glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen”
